In
June, organizers of the July 4th celebration in Maddock,

North Dakota, contacted Firemann to see if he was willing to serve as Grand Marshall in the parade. He had some misgivings and said he felt a little like an ex-patriot because he had moved to Bismarck. We did our best to convince him that he and Mary Lois had contributed significantly to the community over the years and he was most deserving of the honor. He eventually accepted the offer from the city fathers.

The events started with a church service in the City Park. It was a gorgeous day with temperatures in the low 80s and little wind.
