Pictured with Pam and Meredith are Chef Daniel [pronounced "Danielle"] and his wife, Arlette.  His English was pretty good, Pam said, but with a thick French accent.  Sometimes, Arlette translated.

Meredith got plenty of hands-on experience, including beheading a quail with a cleaver.  A husband and wife from Canada were fellow students and Chef Daniel kept everyone busy with individual tasks.

Meanwhile, Reed and I drove south to Marseilles.  On the outskirts of the city, we passed a throng of people, all headed in the same direction.  We discovered a flea market packed with people.

Everything was colorful but most of the merchandise was not price marked and I didn't think I was in a position to barter.  Heck, I had trouble enough converting Euros to dollars in my head.

When I finally stumbled across something with an advertised price, it was too fragile to transport home.

I'm not sure if these were lamp shades but they certainly were unique.

After an hour at the market, we drove a few miles west to the small resort town of Carry.  We had a beer at a local outdoor cafe and admired the view of the Mediterranean.  Pam and Meredith returned to Aix around 5:00 p.m.  As parting gifts, Daniel and Arlette gave them six bottles of wine from the Chateau de Clapier winery. We ate, tasted some French wine,  and rested up for a trek north Monday morning.
