Vukelic Cup 2008
Every year, the best golfers from the United States take on their counterparts from Europe in the Presidents Cup or the Ryder Cup. And each year, some of the most stalwart golfers in North Dakota challenge one another in the prestigious Vukelic Cup. This was the seventh year for the affair.

Warming up on the putting green were Dave "Never met a tree that wouldn't kick my ball back onto the fairway" Cantrell and Bob "Too Tall" Freed.

Here are just a few of the participants: Scott Halvorson, Dennis Steele, Bob Freed, and Dale Hoerauf

There was the typical jawboning and exchange of barbs before as the first group took the tee box. Chuck Ortlip, Dennis Steele, Dave Cantrell, Scott Halvorson, and Nick Kjos are seen here "getting loose."

One golfer had to drop out at the last minute so I observed while Mike Heilman and Gary Gronberg played a match on the front nine. Too look at him, you would have thought Mike was in deep trouble as Gary lined up his putt. However, Mike prevailed with a two and one decision.

Chuck Ortlip and Jerry Renner wait [and wait] to tee off on #10.

The Great Scott was on fire with the flat stick. While he and partner Dave Cantrell halved their front nine match against Dale Hoerauf and Jerry Renner, on the back nine, Scott crushed Dennis winning seven of nine holes. Scott also won the longest putt contest on #13 by sinking a 3-footer. Okay, it was more like 18 feet and a downhill sidewinder to boot.

Gary Gronberg shows off the latest golf sighting tool. "It helped me keep my focus," Gary quipped.
