The Lake is clean and pristine. Although motorized boats are allowed, we did not see many on the lake.

The Park features the headwaters of the 2,552-mile-long Mississippi River. The Ojibwa or Chippewa Tribe called it the Misipi or Great River. Reed is standing in the middle of the river.

Elsewhere in the park is the Aiton Heights observation tower. Built in the 1930s, it is a bit rickity and signs warn that no more than six people should be on the tower at one time. When we got to the top and I was taking a few photos, I felt the tower swaying. I thought this unusual since there was almost no wind. Then I saw Reed using his body weight to move the platform a little from one side to the other. Just trying to give his old dad a thrill.

We spent the night at the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen. Notice the patriotic extended wagon in the background.
