2008 - Mom's birthday is in January and Franci had a plan I particularly liked. She would bring food to Mom's place and I would help eat it.
The meal included a birthday cake. While I don't want to give away Mom's age, let's just say she's been holding it well for a very long time.
Jenna served coffee.
Jaylia and Mom chat after we were done eating.
Mom holds a card with a battery taped to it, symbolic of a remote car starter we will have installed in her van so she can warm it up on those cold blustery days from the comfort of her apartment.
There is no help for winter. It chases us indoors until it has spent its fury. But occasionally, it gives us a respite. On January 27, it warmed up to 49 degrees. And what would a normal sun-loving lad do on such a balmy Sunday afternoon?
That's right--golf. Intrepid friend Nick joined me for a little sport at Apple Creek Country Club, open year round though they don't want anyone walking on the greens.
So we improvised a game involving driving and chipping. Nick won the first hole where 50 cents was on the line. Big gamblers.
I rallied with a push on the second hole and won the third. Alas, I found the tree guarding the center of the fairway on #18. Hit that sucker dead center, no easy feat. Lost my first match of '08.
Maybe it's global warming, but there is very little snow in western North Dakota. And to think I spent big bucks getting my snow blower tuned up this fall. There's still March.
